If you haven't read Julian is a Mermaid, by Jessica Love to your nanny kid yet, I don't blame you. It took me months of hard work to get my hands on a copy! Ok, so sitting on the library's waitlist wasn't physically that hard, but after the hype this book got for its release, waiting wasn't easy! (If you don't have the patience I do or access to a library, order it here !)
But man was it worth it. This book has beautiful illustrations, an endearing ending that will make you cry, and MERMAIDS. What's not to love.
After Julian sees mermaids while at the pool with his abuela, he decides he wants to be one too, even though he's not sure how his abuela will feel about it.

This book's light hearted take on gender fluidity is the perfect read for #pridemonth. It's all about love, acceptance, and celebrating who you truly are.

I highly recommend this picture book. My NK has asked to read it EVERY day since we picked it up two weeks ago. He loves the pictures, but the best thing for me is the conversation we had after the first read. He is a huge lover of dress up and make believe play, in particular super heroes. However, I ALWAYS have to be Wonder Woman because "I'm a girrrrrrrlllll." After reading, Julian is a Mermaid, my NK was shocked to know that boys can be mermaids?! It was a major break through for him and I finally get to be Superman for a change. (;
